The Plot of Jubilee

The programme centres on renowned filmmaker Srikant Roy (Prosenjit Chatterjee) of Roy Talkies, his celebrity wife Sumitra Kumari (Aditi Rao Hydari), her liaison with up-and-coming performer Jamshed Khan (Nandish Sandhu), and Roy’s treatment of Sumitra.

The producer gives lab technician Binod Das (Aparshakti Khurana) the assignment to correct everything by Friday so that Khan can make his much-anticipated film debut as Madan Kumar.

A Story Inspired by Real-Life Scandal

The plot of the show seemed uncannily similar to what is frequently hailed as the first scandal in Hindi cinema. Those who are familiar with the history of Hindi cinema would have already recognised how Himanshu Rai, a real-life star producer, is modelled by Srikant Roy, and Roy Talkies is essentially Bombay Talkies, India’s first film company.

Devika Rani, Himanshu Rai’s wife and a star of the 1930s and 1940s, is the inspiration for Srikant’s famous wife Sumitra Kumari.

According to reports, Himanshu Rai was producing Jawani Ki Hawa in 1935, a movie with a love story similar to that of Sumitra and Jamshed from the television series. He cast his famous wife as the female protagonist and debuted Najmul Hassan as an actress for the movie.

How Jubilee Pays Homage to Hindi Cinema

Once more stepping in, Sasadhar Mukherjee suggested Kumudlal Ganguly, his brother-in-law, who was employed as a lab technician at Bombay Talkies. Franz Osten, a German artist, opposed the release of Kumudlal, however Himanshu Rai eventually agreed.

Returning to Jubilee, it appears that Sasadhar Mukherjee and Kumudlal Ganguly, better known as Ashok Kumar, inspired Aparshakti’s character. Himanshu Rai is portrayed by Srikant Roy, Devika Rani by Sumitra Kumari, and Najmul Hassan by Jamshed Khan.
