Ram Gopal Varma supports ‘The Kerala Story’, questions ‘death like silence of Bollywood’

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has come out in support of ‘The Kerala Story’, questioning the “death like silence of Bollywood” on the success of the film. He took to Twitter on Sunday to call the Sudipto Sen directorial a ‘ghostly mirror’, reflecting the ‘dead face of mainstream Bollywood’.

The film has been embroiled in controversy since the release of its trailer as it claimed that over 32000 women from Kerala were forced to convert to Islam and recruited to ISIS. Although the figure was later omitted from the trailer, it continued to draw criticism.

In his tweets, Ram Gopal Varma wrote that “it’s difficult to learn from #KeralaStory because it’s easy to copy a lie but very difficult to copy truth”. He also added that the movie will “haunt like a mysterious fog in every story discussion room and every corporate house in Bollywood forever”. He concluded by stating that the death-like silence of Bollywood on the shattering success of The Kerala Story is due to their comfort in telling lies to both themselves and others.

Even actor Manu Rishi Chadha emphasized the importance of never banning any form of art, stating that “the entire industry will speak up” if the definition of ban widens.
